Black money remembers the role of C N Annadurai in challenging the Hindi imperialism and authoritarian centre ,against the federal norms

The Black money letter to PM, the third in a three part series on demonetization  is not merely a satire but also echoes the heartbeat of every Indian citizen , the real  Indian of not so many India, but only one India, the United  States of India, the  true  federal India which the former chief Minister , C N Annadurai of Tamil Nadu dreamt of  and articulated on many platforms ,including in Indian parliament .He envisaged India as one federation where all the constituents of  states will have more powers and autonomy in economic decision taking and the Centre will keep only those areas –the spheres of activity which   the states cannot  and will not perform  and the centre alone should /could do .Given the academic partner or independently  I will work on his vision at an uncertain future date fusing with the basic elements of Marx and Keynes .During my student days  I had been an admirer of Anna for his simplicity, frugality and scholarship, though coming from an ordinary farmer’s/weaver’s family, without any political background . Most of the youngsters like us were part of the anti-Hindi agitation in 1965.But for the DMK movement led by Annadurai,the Hindi imperialism would not have been moderated .

To readers and my students, I must hasten to add that our opposition was not against the language Hindi but against its imposition on the country as the sole language to the utter neglect of other languages which are richer and stronger in literature and many thousands year old tradition ,history and grammar .In my village school, I was good in English ,Tamil and also Hindi. Before the imposition of Hindi ,we started learning Hindi  from 8^th standard onwards .How many of you will believe when I recollect from memory and say that I was extremely well versed in Hindi grammar and in one of the examinations  I secured 95% out of 100, beating /outsmarting one boy and who had come from Ahmadabad  and he later  became school leader .when we went to 10^th and 11^th standard.

I fondly remember my two Hindi  High school Teachers Mr Shanmugham and Mr Krishnamoorthy  .I had also passed the Hindi prathmic  -the first level examination  and the certificate, which was photo framed  and kept for a long time at home was  thrown into dustbin  later while  clearing the debris .All the certificates including from Tamil Manram were gone and  all the certificates met a  similar fate .  Even now I have few Hindi books, read by my first  M Phil  Literature daughter and I  do have an occasional glance .My handwriting in Hindi is on par with English and Tamil .People in the south are not against the Jindi language but only against the imposition .

My youngest daughter who is fluent in both English and French, did not read Hindi, but by watching TV, mastered the spoken language and she could follow and converse it ,besides having some silken touch with Telugu language .

Going back to Anna many scholars from Canada and the United States have done proper and relevant research on his political ideology and opined that he has relevance for all time. Being a scholar in Economics from Pachiappa’s college ,Madras  and also having an incredible mastery and   command over  Tamil and English with greater fluency in both , he had the concern for the common man as he lived in the age of common man .

It  is  our great loss that he breathed last within just two years after the assumption of office as CM of Tamil Nadu ,which was called as Madras state before he took over as CM. In 1969  he changed the name of Madras state into  Tamil Nadu .I was the second year  M A student  in Madras presidency college at that time .Against the  doctor’s advice  he participated in the function of renaming Madras as Tamil Nadu , held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Triplicane  and I was a participant there ,standing in the balcony ,to get a glimpse of the unshaven face of one of the greatest world leaders –a real statesman  ,par excellence .

If God wills besides going through my areas of specialization namely, currency crisis and globalization literature, I will go into the idea of  true federal India that every citizen wants  and do some good write up for safeguarding the real federal structure of India where states will not be treated as appendages and puppets in the hands of the centre, but will become the  active participants in deciding the fate of the nation, as India is a land of great  cultural diversity, richness of several languages and healthy traditions and practices .

Well informed people know now that you are a shrewd, smart, tactical, and enterprising politician , in the politics industry ; you have stooped down to a low level in your tirade against the opposition  and that has merited attention from domestic and international audience . They have understood what kind of PM you are .Having  zero friends, zero advisors and living in  a bubble of  I- Me and My ,you mistakenly think that you know everything  .. As an isolated arrogant lonely man, cunning  , strategic ,sadistic , employing an army of people  to sell your brand and stress your invincibility and more important ,always mistakenly  equating yourself  with the country, you want to be known as  an authoritarian leader and give a signal that questioning your misdeeds ,corrupt deals if any and or the wrong actions taken  a la  demonetization and so on would amount to attacking the nation .This supreme economic nonsense has reached its expiry date and the time has come to listen to people rather than expecting them to sing your glory. You have unmasked yourself adequately .

You did not do what you were supposed to do and you did everything what people did not want you to do /What did you do, gentleman asks the common man  ?

You are not here to do micro management of what people should eat, what dress they must wear, which religion they should embrace and so on; more importantly, Hinduism is a way of life; nationalism is part of the breath of the Indian community; they cannot be twisted and molested and transformed into different alchemy of barbaric Hindututva, to do electoral politics.

The state has no right to step into the personal and social life and you cannot force feed BJP brand of nationalism and patriotism and Hindutva brand of religion which is not Hinduism; your RSS agenda appears to be now a hydra headed monster which needs to be tamed on war footing for the good of the country, stability of the currency and well being of the people

Revisiting Demonetization two years after and the brand called Modi : excerpts from the forthcoming book .

More than two and a half years have rolled on since its launch and its benefits are almost nil while the costs -both in real and monetary terms have been enormous. As the measure was a gross failure ,it did not merit attention to be included in the achievement list , nor was it mentioned in election rally ;however  the PM who has become a specialist in telling lies even after he has been fully exposed ,told in some context  in the midst of election rally that the black money holders are crying after having lost money .No sane fellow will have any respect for this liar regardless of the fact whether he wins by manipulative mechanism or lose by the benevolent fate .

There are different narratives on this misplaced economic   adventure which had clear political overtones. There is a great deal of confusion and strong misconceptions surrounding the measure even today .The authors and the architects have been shell shocked by its devastating effects on the people and society, so much so that fresh mandate is being sought on the dead bodies in terrorists attack at home and also in the neighboring country and the routine developments in space research, rather than making any reference to note ban or GST. This alone speaks of the shallowness, crookedness and wickedness of the measure which eventually proved to be more disruptive and destructive in nature.

My friends asked me whether  there is  any need for this work ,especially after election and also many are familiar with the subject  …There are still many educated people and youngsters  who have not grasped the true import of  the issues, events related  to this measure;furthermore Modi the PM has been promoted as a brand and sold in the market with a lot of lies ;the irony is that the brand has become a specialist in telling lies and telling irrelvent details and not showcasing any worthwhile economic achievement to boost of ; and I felt sincerely to invest my time amid summer heat to underline and unmask the real face of the brand and expose the stupidity and futility of the measure introduced by this Brand ; both the brand and the measure  need to be explained in non technical language, although many volumes have appeared. Having failed to convert the lecture notes into essays earlier, I have ventured to invest my time amidst summer heat and the old age related tiredness, to meditate on demonetization. This is a documentation for posterity, to convey we lived in troubled times, the most difficult and dangerous times, because of one man’s ego and misplaced arrogance  .

There are economists who ask you to list at least one solid achievement towards your pet theme, fighting corruption or stimulating growth or giving jobs  or bringing Swiss money or about the scheme which was yours and not borrowed or replicated from the previous regime.

Sir ,one of your leaders  says both you and your party president  do not know economics and more importantly  he tells the truth that  he will give 2 out of 10  for your economic report card  and given his background as a student of Prof Paul Samuelson ,the Nobel Lauret in economics  is honest that the government has failed on the economic front and yet you will win  the election and become PM again. I also feel the same way,given my intuitive power of forecast and in the face of the absence of united front against you

 

 But Sir the common man and also prof  Amartya sen and many others who are worried about your divisive and destructive politics and way of governing the nation do not want to see you as PM again. If the opposition is united ,CM -the common man can pull  you down ,but it is highly unlikely as they are divided and they  accuse each other ; Prof dsam says you have a fair chance of playing second innings as PM with more difficulties  ? Will your party allow you to become PM again? or someone else ,smart enough ,will grab as you have done earlier, sidelining seniors  ? Modi brand is more of a liability than an asset  now ;you must be knowing better than me ; one week is a long time in politics .Be careful  sir .

It might help you to win election, given the idea of India

As it is today;  India Today ,the new fractured India ,

Congress enjoyed it earlier; now you are the beneficiary ;

Meaningful third front is far away ;

The twins of Note Ban and GST have derailed enough

And yet the butterfly effect is not operating

This is chaos theory you may not know ;

Who cares  about economic issues? Deepening water crisis or

Deep seated unemployment will, again drag the economy;

You crow like this; and frighten them, inculcate fear

 It will make sense and be music to their ears

, millionaires and your captive market, must help

Sail through the slippery water of politics;

Post election maneuvering is always there;

The   other side is not that smart , and weak

In this department ; previous empirical evidences
