From where does
love originate?
What is that sends signals of love through our bodies?
It surely starts with the brain. It
analyses what the eye sees and the ear hears and adds it up to something that
moves the person. If one further raise
the question what eventually triggers it, it is probably the adrenal gland.
This is what science would say about love. From the standpoint of literature,
love simply means that the heart goes out to another heart via eye contact in
the very first instance. Regardless of the fact, whether the heart is clean or
mean, light or heavy, open or closed, warm or cold, faint or bold, love strikes
any normal human. Each heart has a life of its own banging all the time right
from the start of life, but also it has its own love story to reveal to others.
Thirukual and
love
The fundamental knot that has been instrumental in
sustaining the evolution of all kinds of life on earth for ages is love and
relationship. After satisfying thirst
and hunger, all living creatures crave for love, friendship and also for
fulfilling sexual urge and all biological needs. While animals have their own limited wisdom,
to mate, only to procreate in a particular
period, or are made to do so in an artificial fashion by man for his selfish
end, the obvious truth is that all
living creatures have an urge for lust or kama, at one stage or another. More than a mere lust, they seek intimacy,
friendship, connectedness and in essence simple unadulterated love.
Our forefathers had an innate insight and a tremendous
foresight, to understand that human life eventually rests on ‘love’ and valour
(termed as Agam and Puram in the Tamil literature). It’s not just in Tamil literature, but
anywhere in the world, in any language
no literature would be complete without touching upon these twin subjects.
Looked at this way, the ancient Tamil Text Thirukkural,
besides dealing with virtues (Aram), wealth and welfare (Porul) – (the
ethical/moral and worldly activities of life) also talks about the nuances and all intricacies of the most tender side of life, the
meaningful side of human relationship – the love between opposite sexes
(Inbam).
